Nicholas Green Distinguished Student AwardAward Introduction:
Originally funded by the Nicholas Green Foundation and
NAGC, this award program is designed to recognize distinguished achievement in
academics, leadership, or the arts, in children grades 3 through 6. NAGC
believes that the Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Awards inspire children
to achieve to their fullest potential, highlight high-ability students, and draw
attention to the educational needs of our nation's gifted and talented
students.
The Nicholas Green Foundation was established by Maggie and Reg
Green to honor the memory of their 7-year-old son Nicholas who was killed in a
drive-by shooting while visiting Italy in 1994. The Greens paired with NAGC to
start the Distinguished Student Awards because they wanted to recognize young
people that are working hard to make the most of their lives and develop their
unique gifts and talents, and who are now about the age that Nicholas was when
he died.
One child per state can be named a Nicholas Green
Distinguished Student and that winner receives a $500 U.S. savings bond and an
NAGC Certificate of Excellence. Eligible students may be nominated by parents,
teachers, students or community/civic groups.
Nomination Information:
Students may nominate themselves or be nominated by
parents, teachers, students or community/civic groups. In addition to the
application form, applicants must submit a letter of recommendation, and a
composition about why they feel their effort is important and how they got
interested in the area for which they are being nominated. The composition must
respond to the following questions:
- What is the activity or interest area for which the
student is being nominated;
- How did the student become interested/involved in the
activity;
- What impact has the activity had on the student and on
others; and
- How have the student's future plans and goals been
affected by this activity or interest area.
The students are free to describe their interests
and accomplishments in any manner, with no specific word or limit or style. A
letter of recommendation must also be submitted. The letter of recommendation
must be from someone other than a nominee's family member such as a teacher or
principal, explaining why the student is deserving of the award, what sets the
student apart from others and how the nominee is impacting others.
