February 7, 2026
Session 1: 9:30 - 11:30 AM
The Questions after the Question: Facilitating Rich Discussions
Classroom discussions and question-asking are the centerpieces of instructional practice. Asking good questions encourages critical thinking, perspective taking, engagement, and deeper understanding. So, how do we know which questions to ask and when? Once we have an initial stimulating question, how do we guide discussions and provide follow up questions that encourage participation, knowledge acquisition, curiosity, and higher level thinking? In this session we explore a research-informed framework that guides the facilitation of purposeful questioning and discussion in the classroom, with emphasis on encouraging advanced thinking and a supportive discourse environment.
Session 2 12:30 - 2:30 PM
Connecting Big Ideas to Support Depth and Engagement
Organizing learning experiences around a strong conceptual focus promotes depth in thinking, rich discussion, and opportunities for authentic connections across disciplines. Concepts also provide space for learners from a wide range of backgrounds to find relevance in the learning and pursue questions that matter to them. In this strand, we explore specific strategies for engaging students in constructing meaning around big ideas, with applications across grade levels and subject areas.
